Liza Al Shurmani earned her bachelor’s degree in teaching English from the University of Aden, Yemen. The educational landscape there predominantly embraced traditional teaching methods and was teacher-centered. However, her educational journey took a significant turn when she enrolled in an English class at Amideast, an American Middle East language school. At Amideast, she was introduced to a style of teaching where the learner was the center of the teaching process, a stark departure from the traditional methods she had encountered before. This exposure to both teaching approaches ignited a curiosity within her, prompting a deeper exploration of teaching methodologies. She became intrigued by the question of how a teacher can cultivate a joyful learning environment. This pivotal experience has not only broadened her perspective but has also fueled her commitment to understanding and implementing effective teaching methods that prioritize the engagement and satisfaction of learners.
Her professional journey commenced during her university years, incorporating a six-month teaching practice at a public school, where she engaged with elementary students, specifically 7th graders. Upon the successful completion of her bachelor’s degree from the University of Aden, she accrued approximately two years of teaching experience across various language schools. A pivotal point in her career was a one-year teaching internship scholarship at Amideast, significantly enhancing her teaching practice and providing valuable exposure to a student-centred classroom environment.
Following the completion of the training, she transitioned into an active teaching role at Amideast, contributing to their educational initiatives for an additional year before relocating to Hungary.
In Hungary, her professional endeavors extended across various language schools for approximately one year. Subsequently, driven by a commitment to continuous learning and professional development, she opted to pursue a master’s degree at Pannon University. This academic pursuit not only allows her to deepen her understanding of both methodology and teaching practices but also aligns with her dedication to advancing her expertise in the field.
In her role as an educator, her teaching style is characterized mostly by a dedicated commitment to learner-centered, autonomous, and collaborative learning. She firmly believes in cultivating an environment where students actively participate in their learning, instilling a sense of autonomy and encouraging self-directed exploration. Creativity is a foundational element of her teaching philosophy. She strives to design each lesson as a unique experience, integrating diverse creative elements such as interactive activities, role-playing, and multimedia resources. This not only captures students’ interest but also stimulates their curiosity, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning atmosphere. Structured on the principles of pre-task, on-task, and after-task, her lessons maintain coherence by seamlessly linking these components together. While predominantly utilizing the inductive method, she also acknowledges and applies the deductive method when it enhances specific learning tasks. Embracing technology stands as an integral component of her teaching style. She incorporates various technological tools and platforms to enhance the learning experience, ensuring students are well-prepared for the digital landscape they will encounter in their future endeavors.
